8/9/02 Today at Pioneer square about 30-50 people gathered to show opposition to the coming war on Iraq, Israeli aggression, loss of civil rights, and U.S. foreign policy. The event opened with an open mic session of short speeches. The topics ranged from opposition to the coming war on Iraq, the anti-union activities being waged against the ILWU, and Israeli imperialism. One of the speakers emphatically denounced Bush's idea of an offensive war as warranting nearly all nations of the world to wage a similar war against America. Concerning the proposed war on Iraq the same speaker called it "an invasion with no reason and no just cause". Another speaker demanded U.S. disarmament, refering for presidential imposture Bush's call for Iraq to disarm to avert the war. The people then marched around downtown carrying signs such as "War kills children" "It's the oil (again)" and "No plan Colombia". They chanted "It's bullshit, get off it, the cause of war is profit". Members handed out flyers to pedestrians and drivers so as to inform them of their demands and rationale. The march ended with a return to Pioneer square and a call to not forget the Palestinians. The protest was sponsored by Portland Peaceful Responce Coalition www.portlandpeacefulresponce.org and apparently some of the flyers printed by the IWW (go wobblies!).

Such stories rarely get throught to germany 10.Aug.2002 08:35

Such stories hardly ever get throught to us in germany.
Occationally we have a short report about anti-war demonstrations on 3sat, the german-austrian-swizz cultural channel, but nothing on "main-stream" television.
Commercial stations (we have a strong public television system), are far worse. Even news-channels blindly just copy badly translated news from CNN.

I wish our government would have declaired solidarity with the people of the US insteadt of their government.
