Bill to save roadless areas introduced into the Senate

At a time when the forests face renewed threats from lawless logging, it is important that we also keep working for what the forests need and what the public wants. For thirty years activists have been struggling to protect the remaining roadless lands on the National Forests -- and with these sensitive areas more at risk than ever -- that struggle goes on.

Senate Roadless Area Conservation Bill Introduced
- Cosponsor Drive Begins

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) recently introduced
the Roadless Area Conservation Act of 2002, S. 2790 with five other
original sponsors, Sen. John Warner (R-VA), Sen. Jeff Bingaman
(D-NM), Sen. Lincoln Chafee
(R-RI), Sen. Max Cleland (D- GA) and Sen. John
Rockefeller (D-WV).

Since the bill was introduced, Sen. Max Baucus
(D-MT) has become a cosponsor (great work Montana activists!).

Many thanks are due to Sen. Cantwell and these
other Senate leaders for standing up for the protection of our remaining
wild forests. If your Senator is listed above, please send a letter on
your organizations letterhead, or for individuals a personal letter
thanking them for their leadership and discussing the need for roadless
area protection in your area.

If your Senator is not mentioned above please
contact them at 202/224-3121, or by fax or email at
 http://www.congress.org or at their
district offices in your state over the August
recess. Please urge them to become cosponsors of the Roadless Area
Conservation Act, S. 2790.
Thanks.

If your Representative is not yet one of the 178
copsonsors of the House version of this bill (please see
 http://www.americanlands.org/cosponsors.htm for a
list of cosponsors), please urge him/her to cosponsor the Roadless
Area Conservation Act of 2002, H.R. 4865. Reps Tom Davis (R-VA), Peter
Visclosky (D-IN) and Michael Doyle (D-PA) are the three newest
cosponsors.

Good stuff. There is a wonderful campaign happening in Oregon called the Oregon Wild Campaign. It proposes to save roadless areas 1,000 acres and larger. These people work really hard tabling and postcarding for the cause, so show your support to them too! Go to the ONRC's (Oregon Natural Resources Council) website ( http://www.onrc.org) and offer to help, or ask your company to endorse this righteous organization. The web site is full of good info and links. This is an important time to implement these plans and reach out to people who may not know the facts about the Forest (dis)Service, and all their shady doings. Get out there and DO SOMETHING!
