In the wake of all the massive corporate criminal charges, one stands out to me as most pleasing. This fallen titan was resonsible for mind numbing adherence to white-bread, 1950s era, ultra-bland consumerism.
Martha Stewart is the worst of American Culture. Her fame and power were gained through manipulation of manufactured needs. Seeing her face during any sort of holiday season was a stark reminder that the collective soul was badly in need of repair. How anyone could believe that "proper Thanksgiving etiquette" could provide them with any more spiritual growth than, say, a walk in the woods, is beyond my ken.
Suffice it to say I'm glad she has been exposed as yet another greedy tycoon bent upon preying on the masses to support her gain. Beyond her technical crimes of stock manipulation, Martha was guilty of beguiling millions into a false promise. This is the sworn credo of Wall Street, that a happy consumer faciliates a happy market facilitates a happy nation. We are not a happy nation, and now people are noticing that a happy market can herald much unhappiness down the road.
Thanks to avaricious financiers like Stewart, people really do believe that peace of mind is no further away than their next dining room set. While most people (perhaps even the most consumer-minded among us) might admit that personal belongings do not foment tranquility, Martha and her ilk spread subconscious cues that distract people. The populace, in turn, becomes so distracted that obvious signs of despair and decay which permeate our communities become irrelevant. All that matters is getting Martha's newest doily collection.
I'll say it. Martha Stewart is a terrorist. No, she doesn't directly take lives or property, but I assure you, the fervent consumerism she perpetuates certainly crushes people and land more decisively than any weapon.
