Another Whistleblower Blasts Primate Care at Oregon Lab - Press Conference To Release Scathing Evaluation

Portland, OR - Unable to quiet his conscience, Tom Larimer, a former primate technician from the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center (ORPRC), is speaking out about mistreatment of monkeys at the lab operated by the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). This Wednesday, July 24th at 11AM, In Defense of Animals (IDA) will hold a press conference to release Mr. Larimer's scathing evaluation of the primate care at the IDA office at 5428 NE 30th St.

Nearly two years have passed since Matt Rossell?s August 2000 press conference exposing abuses at ORPRC that he witnessed while working as a primate technician. An outraged Larimer asserts that he has witnessed the same inhumane primate care working as a primate technician.

"Some of the things I saw on a daily basis there made my blood boil," according to Larimer. "Animal management techniques at the ORPRC are pretty much the same as they were in North American Zoo world circa 1960 - in other words the Dark Ages."

"It's just business as usual at OHSU, and it was only a matter of time before someone else came forward," stated Matt Rossell, who now works for In Defense of Animals. "Primate research is inherently cruel and has more to do with money than science. We need to divert these taxpayer resources into non-animal clinical studies which will go further to advance human health."

At the press conference on Wednesday, IDA will highlight the allegations of the former primate technician and provide copies of the whistleblower?s formal evaluation of primate husbandry practices and related e-mail correspondences. Broadcast quality footage taken inside the Oregon lab will also be made available.
