The UFO phenomenon has been subject to much derision, day dreaming and disinformation for several decades. However, because of the efforts of countless activists, scientists, and muckrakers the subject has emerged as a legitimate field of research worthy of the attention of activists of all stripes concerned with government transparency and accountability. The Disclosure Project is perhaps the most high profile organization devoted to this field of activism with its treetops approach, but Disclosure Project is by no means the only group agitating for public support and awareness. On May 9th, 2001 the Disclosure Project made its debut with a bang at the National Press Club in Washington DC. Dr. Steven Greer, founder of Disclosure Project led the press conference and presented 20 witnesses from the government, military, intelligence and corporate sector who, before representatives of the world's media, spoke of their first-hand experiences with extraterrestrial craft, exotic energy systems, and the secrecy that these subjects are shrouded in. The May 9th press conference is a signifigant landmark because it represents the largest de facto government disclosure of facts regarding the UFO phenomenon ever, since the Disclosure Project has over 400 such witnesses willing to testify before Congress. Plus, these witnesses may not be dismissed as a load of lunatics because among them are former Generals, American astronauts and policy level government officials. Nor can the Disclosure Project be labeled another scam to make money as the witnesses gain nothing but contempt and the Disclosure Project is a registered non-profit.

One such witness is John Callahan, who was a Federal Aviation Administration Division Chief of the Accidents and Investigations Branch. In his sworn testimony he describes how in 1986 a Japanese Airlines 747 was followed for 31 minutes by a UFO that appeared on radar to be four times the size of the 747 it was pursuing. As one of the witnesses at the May 9th press conference, Mr. Callahan explained how the next day the CIA, FBI and members of President Regan's Scientific Study Team looked over the mounds of videotape radar evidence, air traffic communications and paper reports. After viewing the data, the CIA agents informed those present that "the meeting never took place" and that "this event was never recorded" and took possession of all the data in the room, unaware that Mr. Callahan retained video tape, audio communications and other supporting evidence that the event had in fact taken place. The manuvers made by this UFO surpassed the capabilities of known aircraft and the CIA officials confirmed that the object was a UFO and not the Stealth Bomber or some other know aircraft. The pilot of the Japanese 747 was grounded and put in a desk job until he was later reinstated through the efforts of a respected scholar and UFO researcher.

Those who doubt that there is a very real and (mostly) successful campaign to suppress and discredit inquiry into the UFO phenomenon should recall that former President Jimmy Carter made a campaign promise to declassify everything the US government knew about UFOs. This was not just another empty politician's promise (perhaps because President Carter maintains that he has personally witnessed a UFO in flight), President Carter actuallty attempted to instate a serious, worldwide scientific study of the phenomenon but he was thwarted--by the Pentagon. Or so says Disclosure Project witness Dr. Alfred Webre, who was a Senior Policy Analyst at the Center for the Study of Social Policy at the Stanford Research Institue. In 1977 Dr. Webre co-developed the approach to the Carter White House Extraterrestrial Communication Project through Stanford Research Institute. Dr. Webre claims the Pentagon prematurely and illegally halted the project even though it was already approved by the Domestic Policy Staff of the White House. The only explanation given by the Pentagon at that time (and to this day) was that "There are no UFOs."

The argument put forth by the Disclosure Project is that the reason for the extensive, oppressive secrecy surrounding the UFO/ET subject lies with the first question one would ask after accepting "they're here", which is: "how did 'they' GET here?" Innerstellar space travel poses many problems that our scientists are still scratching their heads about--a large number of them in the area of safe, reliable energy generation and propulsion. Supposing that such advanced and exotic energy systems lie classified in some hangar or in the files of some special access compartmentalized project, one might understand the substantial economic reasons to make sure they remain there. Also documented by the witness testimony of several scientists who have lent thier names to the Disclosure Project are not one system but several systems, which could revolutionize energy production and distribution as we know it. Respectively these systems are known as:

--Quantum vacuum/Zero point field access systems
--Electrogravitic & Magnetogravitic energy and propulsion
--Room temperature nuclear effects (cold fusion)
--Electrochemical and related advances in internal combustion systems which achieve near zero emissions and a very high efficiency

Dr. Greer insists that such systems indeed exist (and have existed but have been supressed, Nikola Tesla, etc) within black operations projects and the purpose of this campaign is to not only educate the public about these systems but to rally public support for government leaders to come out under. This strategy is realistic because by acknowledging that when "the people lead, the leaders follow" we do not wait for a savior to rescue us from ecological catastrophy and we recognize the extreme institutional cowardice in Washington that prevents lawmakers from making waves. The Disclosure Project needs US to DEMAND change.

There are several reasons why the information presented by these many credible witnesses should be of concern to solution-oriented activists. The most obvious reason for those working for a better world to pay attention are these energy systems that could easily obsolete the coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear and hydroelectric power generation systems we use today. Does anyone honestly believe that humans are so technologically schizophrenic that they can design microprocessors small enough to be injected into a living organism but the internal combustion engine, after almost a century, has only recently (and slowly, at that) been supplanted by electric hybrid and motors? What does this matter really when one plugs in an electric car when one's local power utility burns COAL to charge it with juice? If as the Disclosure Project states clean, abundant energy generation systems do in fact exist and have been suppressed by certain powerful economic interests, then serious environmentalists and activist of all kinds should at the very least investigate the substantial, documented evidence presented by the Disclosure Project and decide for themselves if such claims have merit.

Oh, great! 11.Jul.2002 21:59

First wild conspiracy theories about the CIA orchestrating 9-11... then chemtrails... I really hope that IMC-Portland doesn't take the bait on this one.

Show me one - ONE - shred of physical evidence that your little green men exist and I'll shut up. Until then, I'll be busy smashing US imperialism.

Oh, and fuck off.

oooh, scary... 12.Jul.2002 01:42

ohmygod - a thought that doesn't come straight from the propaganda factory! run!!! it might bite!!! if NPR and PBS didn't do a story on it, then it definitely doesn't exist - so whatever you do, keep your mind closed at all costs!

Astroturfing? 12.Jul.2002 03:57

Call me a paranoid, having read all sorts of trolling since years, but I can well imagine a d00d posting the article, then posing as a differnet ("Hrumph") guy and adding the comment related to 9-11 so as to ridicule the people who outline the insider trading of death and the anthrax attacks Fort Dietrick origin, by associating them with UFO zealots.

Astroturfing anyone?

nobody can make you look at evidence, that's your prerogative.

here's a detailed report of the JAL 1628 flight that includes drawings made by the flight crew of the objects they witnessed and transcriptions of the conversations between the flight crew, ground control, and military radar installations.

copies of the crews flight report, FAA reports of the incidence and other official documents can be seen any anyone interested enough to look for them. there is radar evidence recorded on video.

the more you research this incident the more intriguing it appears.

I know this is tough... 12.Jul.2002 11:57

But look at the data before formulating conclusions. Thank you to 'not the thread originator' (and I assure you, he/she is not, nor am I Hrumph) for providing the report, because for anyone who bothers to REVIEW THE EVIDENCE can see that imperialism and ufos and chemtrails and 911 can exist all in one world. Its a big universe, and get this-LOTS of stuff is going on, like, ALL THE TIME. I think this is why it is usually advisable to CHECK THE SOURCES, which I attempted to supply. Be careful though--you might learn something.

PS to Hrumph, um, video radar data IS physical evidence.

"It was the darndest thing I've ever seen. It was big, it changed colors and it was about the size of the moon. We watched it for ten minutes, but none of us could figure out what it was. One thing's for sure, I'll never make fun of people who say they've seen unidentified objects in the sky. If I become president, I'll make every piece of information this country has about UFO sightings available to the public and the scientists."

Pilot encounters with UFOs:
Study Challenges Secrecy

by: LESLIE KEAN  lkean@ix.netcom.com

IN JANUARY, Agence France Presse reported that a Siberian airport was shut for 11/2 hours while a luminescent unidentified flying object hovered above its runway. Although it's hard to imagine such an event taking place in the industrialized United States, a compelling October 2000 study by a retired aerospace scientist from NASA-Ames Research Center shows that similar incidents have occurred in American skies over the last 50 years. "Aviation Safety in America -- A Previously Neglected Factor" presents more than 100 pilot and crew reports of encounters with unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) that appear to have compromised aviation safety.

Author Richard F. Haines, formerly NASA's chief of the Space Human Factors Office and a Raytheon contract scientist, is chief scientist for the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena (NARCAP), a research organization founded last year. In stunning detail, pilots and crew describe a range of geometric forms and lights inconsistent with known aircraft or natural phenomena. Bizarre objects paced aircraft at relatively near distances, sometimes disabling cockpit instruments, interrupting ground communications, or distracting the crew.

The data include 56 near-misses. Impulsive responses by pilots to an approaching high-speed object can be hazardous; in a few cases, such violent evasive reactions injured passengers and flight attendants. However, Haines states that there is no threat of a collision caused directly by UAPs "because of the reported high degree of maneuverability shown by the UAP." While flying over Lake Michigan in 1981, TWA Capt. Phil Schultz saw a "large, round, silver metal object" with dark portholes equally spaced around the circumference that "descended into the atmosphere from above," according to his hand-written report. Schultz and his first officer braced themselves for a mid-air collision; the object suddenly made a high-speed turn and departed.

Veteran Japan Airlines 747 Capt. Kenju Terauchi reported a spectacular prolonged encounter over Alaska in 1986. "Most unexpectedly, two space ships stopped in front of our face, shooting off lights," he said. "The inside cockpit shined brightly and I felt warm in the face." Despite the Federal Aviation Administration's determination that he and his crew were stable, competent and professional, he was grounded for speaking out.

In 1997, a Swissair Boeing 747 over Long Island just missed a glowing, white, cylindrical object speeding toward the plane. According to an FAA Civil Aviation Security Office memorandum, pilot Philip Bobet said that "if the object was any lower, it may have hit the right wing."

Ground-systems operators have also been affected by UAP. "The element of surprise means a decrease in safety because it diverts the attention of air-traffic controllers that should be focused on landing planes. That is a danger," says Jim McClenahen, a recently retired FAA air-traffic-control specialist and NARCAP technical adviser.

"Aviation Safety in America" does not attempt to explain the origin of these mysterious objects. But Haines writes that hundreds of reports, some dating back to the 1940s, "suggest that they [UAPs] are associated with a very high degree of intelligence, deliberate flight control, and advanced energy management."

In the 1950s, pilots and crews reported seeing flying discs, cigar-shaped craft with portholes, and gyrating lights, all with extraordinary technical capabilities. Documents show the unexplained objects were considered a national security concern. By order of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, commercial pilots were required to report sightings and the unauthorized release of a UFO report could cost them 10 years in prison or a $10,000 fine.

To keep this information from the public, officials ridiculed and debunked legitimate sightings, angering some pilots. According to the Newark Star Ledger in 1958, more than 50 commercial pilots who had reported sightings, each with at least 15 years of major airline experience, blasted the policy of censorship and denial as "bordering on the absolutely ridiculous."

These pilots said they were interrogated by the Air Force, sometimes all night long, and then "treated like incompetents and told to keep quiet," according to one pilot. "The Air Force tells you that the thing that paced your plane for 15 minutes was a mirage or a bolt of lightening," he told the Star-Ledger. "Nuts to that. Who needs it?" As a result, many pilots "forget" to report their sightings at all, one pilot said.

According to a 1952 Air Force Status Report on UFOs for the Air Technical Intelligence Center, pilots were so humiliated that one told investigators, "If a space ship flew wing-tip to wing-tip formation with me, I would not report it." The vast majority of sightings by American pilots are still not reported. The media perpetuate the censorship and ridicule, handicapping the collection of valuable data.

In contrast, other countries are openly investigating the impact of UAP on aviation safety. A 1999 French study by retired generals from the French Institute of Higher Studies for National Defense and a government agency with the National Center for Space Studies examined hundreds of well-documented pilot reports from around the world. The study could not explain a 1994 Air France viewing of a UAP that instantaneously disappeared as confirmed by radar and a 1995 Aerolineas Argentinas Boeing 727 encounter with a luminous object that extinguished airport lights as the plane attempted to land.

"Aeronautic personnel must be sensitized and prepared to deal with the situation," the report states. They must first "accept the possibility of the presence of extraterrestrial craft in our sky." Then, "it is necessary to overcome the fear of ridicule."

In 1997, the Chilean government formed the Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena (CEFAA) following publicly acknowledged observations of unidentified flying objects at a remote Chilean airport. Both the French group and Gen. Ricardo Bermudez Sanhuesa, president of the CEFAA, have made overtures to the U.S. government for cooperation on this issue, with no response. General Bermudez, and Air Force Gen. Denis Letty, chairman of the French group, said in recent interviews that the Haines study has international significance and should be taken seriously.

Brian E. Smith, current head of the Aviation Safety Program at NASA-Ames, agrees. "There is objective evidence in pilot reports of unexplained events that may affect the safety of the aircraft, " he says. "Yet getting people to take an objective look at this subject is sometimes like pulling teeth." Indeed, the Airline Pilots Association, our largest pilots union, and the Flight Safety Foundation, describing itself as "offering an objective view of aviation safety developments," ignored NARCAP requests for a response to the study. In recent phone interviews with this reporter, representatives dismissed the report out of hand after glancing at the executive summary.

However, such dismissals may soon lose ground. Next Wednesday, John Callahan, former division chief of the Accidents and Investigations Branch of the FAA, will disclose FAA documentation and subsequent CIA suppression of the Terauchi encounter over Alaska. Callahan will be joined by more than 20 other government and military witnesses, and dozens more on videotape, at a National Press Club briefing to challenge official secrecy about this subject.

Retired United Airlines Capt. Neil Daniels, whose DC-10 was forced into a left turn because of magnetic interference of cockpit compasses by a brilliant UAP, is among the many who want change. "The energies out there are absolutely profound," he says. "I think we need to know what they are."
