Inappropriate Use of Gorillas 31.May.2002 05:39

Respect Allbeings

The poster created to point out President Bush's complicity in the 9.11 attacks uses a gorilla, and perhaps a monkey meant to convey a negative human emotion.

Using animals, especially endangered species, to represent human emotions, especially those that lead to negativity, is a great tragedy. Species are rapidly becoming extinct--at the rate of four a day it is said somewhere. We are a species at the top of the line as species go. At this point it seems anachronistic at best, and downright uncaring at worst, to use animals in any way that disparages them.

Most of us have managed to stop using racist remarks such as "Indian-giver," and "Jew him down," for example; now each of us should start examining how we continue the degradation of our fellow beings in our common speech and illustrations. After most of the species visible to the eye disappear, ours is next.
