Osamagate Breaks Open
by John-Paul Leonard
The latest controversy in Washington over "what the President knew and when, before September 11" coincides with the launch of a detailed, 400-page book documenting that the White House and the CIA must have known much more than George Bush has admitted.
In fact, they may have known all about it - and even pitched in!
With its double-edged title, "The War on Freedom" traces the 9/11 plot back years before the Bush administration. A thinly veiled recipe for the outrage appeared in a 1997 study by Carter foreign policy advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski. "Zbig" proclaimed in his book, The Grand Chessboard, that for America to be a global superpower, we must occupy Central Asia. However, it might be impossible to generate the needed political support, "except in the circumstance of a truly massive and widely perceived direct external threat." Done that already!
From there, the plot thickens to the consistency of cement. By July 2001, FBI agents had learned all the key details of the WTC bombing plot - who, when, where and how - but were muzzled by their superiors. This is on the testimony of their attorney, who is none other than David Schippers, the Congressional prosecutor in the Clinton impeachment trial! No further comment needed there... For six weeks, Schippers tried to warn anyone on Capitol Hill who would listen, John Ashcroft in particular.
Even the idea of using planes as bombs was first hatched by the CIA itself, in a $150,000 study from 1993. Sure enough, the first couple incidents occurred the next year - including one crash right on the White House presidential bedroom. Then quiet again. So our top brass, apparently sound sleepers all, could insist they had never heard of such a thing before 9/11.
Then there are the maddeningly intriguing business connections between the bin Laden and Bush families, via investments in defense conglomerate Carlyle Group, which has rocketed to riches during the last decade. The wealthy bin Ladens even helped young Bush Jr. get his first start up in business, while Osama began his terrorist career with the CIA against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Alleged most wanted man Osama met cordially again with a CIA case officer during a stay at the American Hospital in Dubai in July 2001. He lives a charmed life, escaping bunker-buster bombs to disappear somewhere in the ether, and is no longer even a pretended target of U.S. operations. Maybe on a witness protection program for retired spooks somewhere? Good old America, loyal and generous to a fault.
There is the clear evidence that Al-Qaeda was completely infiltrated by Western intelligence, and the CIA itself supplied the encryption for bin Laden's communications - which court records show they regularly monitored.
Amazing arrangements were made to allow the hijackers to attend flight schools, and even terrorist training at CIA facilities in the U.S., in spite of visa violations and terrorist files at the FBI. Now the INS is the scapegoat, but in fact, executive orders under the Clinton and Bush administrations overrode protests by U.S. Embassy staff in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Perhaps to save such embarrassment, our government then decided to allow Saudi travel agencies to issue visas!
There is the ultimatum by American negotiators to the Taliban in July 2001: clear the route for the UNOCAL pipeline (dear to an oilman's heart) and take a carpet of gold, or else a carpet of bombs. America already had long-standing preparations to attack Afghanistan in October 2001 - perfect clockwork.
In the last weeks and days before 9/11, highly specific warnings of an imminent attack poured into Washington from dozens of foreign spy agencies - after all, they were monitoring the same people and phones as the CIA. Then there were the stock market speculators who knew airlines and other WTC-related companies would take a hit. Strange, the trail didn't lead inside bin Laden's cave, but to a brokerage firm, until recently headed by executive CIA director Buzzy Krongard...
So then the story was squelched. Right after 9/11, the President moved swiftly to neutralize the Freedom of Information Act, too, with an executive order giving himself the privilege to seal presidential records for eternity. He also repeatedly asked Majority leader Daschle to please stop any investigation into intelligence failure, because it would detract from the war on terror!? The anthrax spores in his office must have helped Daschle concentrate, too. They came from a U.S. military lab. And like the WTC case, still no suspects charged, in spite of thousands questioned and arrested. Doesn't look too much like an inside job, does it.
On the day of the attack itself, Bush dawdled in elementary school, later he and Cheney made up the excuse that a presidential order to shoot down passenger jets would have been necessary before scrambling fighters. In fact, interception of hijacked or non-responding planes is FAA / USAF / NORAD standard operating procedure - within ten minutes. The Boeing bombshells strayed up to an hour and half unmolested before hitting their targets.
There is so much incriminating evidence in the book it can be hard to decide what to include in a short review. Much of it has been published before, in snippets from all over, but this is the first book out that brings it all together, with sources and in-depth analysis. The author, Nafeez M. Ahmed, is now donating his chapter four, on government foreknowledge, to the public. It will be posted on the Web at http://www.mediamonitors.net/mosaddeq36.html or http://www.mediamonitors.net/mosaddeq35.html.
Everyone may have a chance to see for themselves now whether there is a smoking gun in this tangled web. Whatever our affiliation, I think most of us at least will heartily agree with the book's call for a full investigation.
