Two of Indymedia Israel's video activists, who were documenting the demonstration on video, were beaten and forcibly taken into a police vehicle. At the entrance to the police van, one of the police officers grabbed the camera away and repeatedly smashed it against the step of the van until the camera was broken beyond repair. The police broke another camera during the early stages of violence against the protestors.
When one of the Indymedia activists called out in protest of the camera's destruction, he was summarily forced to the ground and beaten by seven police officers. He ended up in the emergency room of Ichilov Hospital in Tel-Aviv.
Indymedia Israel will continue to film and document protests and other events, and defend our right to bring to the public important pictures and articles which other media organizations believe to be of minimal importance.
We have submitted an official complaint to the court against the police for their purposeful destruction of the video cameras.
Further, we are requesting funds to replace the video cameras (we have one working camera left), and in order to increase our general ability to document anti-occupation protests and demonstrations, both in Israel and in occupied Palestine.
