Jailblazers.com

It's damage control time in Blazer country. The Portland NBA franchise has taken steps to ensure that an Internet URL doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
As if we needed more proof that the Paul Allen organization in general and the Portland Trail Blazers in particular have come to symbolize pathetic losers, now comes word that the public relations power sluts in the publicly-financed Rose Garden have been working overtime. Certain team members' legal troubles have been chronicled to death in the mainstream press. This unfavorable publicity led someone to invent a new name for the NBA franchise --the Jailblazers. The name has woven itself into the fabric of local idiom with amazing swiftness.

This apparently bothered the Blazers' flacks terribly. So terribly, in fact, that they registered the Internet domain name "jailblazers.com." Want proof? Here's the registration information gleaned from a "whois" search:

The PR peeps must still be reeling from their failure to timely register "tradewhitsitt.com." That domain name belongs to Jim Abeles, husband of Katherine Topaz. She's the one who was kicked out of the Rose Garden -- along with Abeles' son -- for holding up a sign that read "TRADE WHITSITT." By the way, you should visit tradewhitsitt.com and jimabeles.com. You'll find numerous photos of a lovely family -- the kind a quality sporting franchise encourages to attend its games.

Oh, one more thing. You'll notice that the Trail Blazers' registration of "jailblazers.com" expires on July 31. Memo to Mary Renouf-Hanson: Better renew! Recent events lead one to believe that the moniker just might stick.
