Controversial author, filmmaker and progressive social commentator Michael Moore will headline a rally and book signing on Saturday, April 20, 5-7:00 pm at the State Capitol Steps in Salem. Moore's book, "Stupid White Men" has been at the top of the New York Times Book List for the past month. It is also the Number 1 selling book in Canada and England.
Moore first burst upon the American scene in the late 80s as the director of the acclaimed film Roger & Me, a story of the filmmaker's attempts to interview then-GM Chairman Roger Smith about the closing of the automaker's factories in Moore's hometown of Flint, Michigan.
He continued his upward climb as America's foremost progressive social critic by writing the bestseller, Downsize This! and hosted the Emmy-winning television series, TV Nation.
"Stupid White Men is a total masterpiece...The funniest book in a long time. Absolutely amazing, satirical wit, great journalism, great research," is the way the book is described by the BBC Review.
Moore's appearance in Salem is part of a three-day swing through the Willamette Valley. He will appear on Friday, April 19, 7:30 p.m. at Lewis & Clark College and on Sunday, April 21, 5:00 p.m. at the Erb Memorial Union at the University of Oregon.
Salem Mayor Mike Swaim, Marion-Polk Green Party Co-Chair Mary Paladino and activist Lloyd Marbet will round out the schedule for the local event. Local folk singer Kelly Murray will provide musical entertainment and attendees will have the opportunity to purchase Moore's book and have it autographed by the author.
