A WHOLE BUNCH OF TAX DAY PROTEST EVENTS PLANNED IN PORTLAND

Are you pissed off about being forced to pay for war and genocide? You're not alone! Join War Resisters League, Portland Peaceful Response, and the Peace in Colombia Action Group for a whole weekend full of events protesting Tax Day.
Dear friends and colleagues--

Are you getting ready to pay your taxes this year, and
just throwing up at the thought of all the death and
destruction you're being forced to pay for? Are you
getting mad enough to think about NOT paying your
taxes this time around? Are you already not paying
your taxes, and wanting some support? You're not
alone!

The following is a list of progressive community
events being planned around Tax Day 2002. Please
forward this to friends who may be interested!

WAR TAX RESISTERS RALLY
FRIDAY, APRIL 12
5:00 PM
PIONEER SQUARE

Portland Peaceful Response's regular Friday evening
vigil against the "war on terrorism" will be combined
with the War Resisters' League annual rally against
war taxes. Oregon war tax resisters will make a
ceremonial presentation of withheld tax monies to
groups working for peace and social justice (including
Portland Peaceful Response). There will then be a
march to the Federal Building, home of the local IRS
office, where there will be a SYMBOLIC BURNING OF TAX
FORMS. Bring a tax form and a match or lighter!
Please note, this event is not JUST for war tax
resisters. Even if you paid your taxes, come anyway
and show your support for those who are taking the
risk to resist.

AFRO-COLOMBIAN ACTIVIST NIMIA VARGAS SPEAKS
SATURDAY APRIL 13
5:00 PM
AINSWORTH UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
(NE 29TH & AINSWORTH)

If you're interested in hearing more about where your
tax money goes (against your will) come hear feminist
activist Nimia Vargas, from the Choco region of
Colombia, speak about the effects of "Plan Colombia"
on her community. There's $1.2 billion of our tax
money going to pay for death squads in Colombia, and
Bush wants to appropriate even more.

HELEN CALDICOTT SPEAKS
SUNDAY APRIL 14
11 AM - 1 PM
HILTON HOTEL
(921 SW 6TH)

This is not officially a tax day event, but is a rare
opportunity to hear one of the world's foremost
scientists and critics of nuclear madness. Talk about
bad stuff our taxes are paying for!

WAR TAX RESISTANCE WORKSHOP
SUNDAY APRIL 14
2:00 - 4:00 PM
MULTNOMAH CTY CENTRAL LIBRARY
(801 SW 10TH)
"US BANK ROOM"

Come find out about the strategies and risks of
various levels of war tax resistance, with members of
Porland's war tax resistance community.

FLIERS FOR FILERS AND PENNY POLL
MONDAY APRIL 15
4:00 PM
MAIN POST OFFICE
(SW BROADWAY & HOYT)

Join War Resisters League in leafleting last-minute
tax filers in front of the main post office, to help
them think about our complicity in war. There will
also be a penny poll, inviting passers-by to vote for
how they would choose to spend tax monies, by
symbolically dropping pennies into jars labeled to
correspond with different government services. (This
is done every year, in cities all over the country,
and every year the people state loud and clear that
they do NOT want a huge war budget.)

TAX DAY RALLY AND MARCH AGAINST PLAN COLOMBIA
MONDAY, APRIL 15
5:00 PM RALLY AT PIONEER SQUARE
6:00 PM MARCH TO MAIN POST OFFICE (SW BROADWAY & HOYT)

Join Peace in Colombia Action Group for a rally
against Plan Colombia and a march to the main post
office, where we'll either be joining or replacing the
contingent from the War Resisters League, depending on
how long their action lasts.

I hope to see you at one of these events!
