Who is Portland Copwatch?

Who is Portland Copwatch?

This is our first post on the IndyMedia Site, but we've seen various
things we've written show up here. (We've also seen ourselves mentioned
in some other postings.) We thought it might be a good idea to say
something about who we are and what we do.

This is our first post on the IndyMedia Site, but we've seen various
things we've written show up here. (We've also seen ourselves mentioned

something about who we are and what we do.

Copwatch is a non-profit, volunteer-run education and advocacy group.
Since 1992, we've offered assistance to people who have complaints against
the police, presented trainings on Your Rights and the Police and on
observing the police ("copwatching"), published a newsletter,
monitored
the so-called Independent Police Review board, and
documented police actions at demonstrations and other events. If you want
to know what we think about particular issues or recent events, check out our
website at www.portlandcopwatch.org.

We also maintain an email list featuring news about police misconduct and
what people are doing about it. To sign up, send an email to
 copwatch@portlandcopwatch.org.

If you'd like to volunteer, or would like to receive our newsletter, call
our office at 503-236-3065.

To report incidents involving the Portland Police, call 503-321-5120.

Sheila Johnson

Portland Copwatch are a bunch of backstabbing ,ego mongering ,self centered ,pimps. Who aren't what that say they are.

"Sheila" and "Cort" searches reveal... 02.Apr.2002 12:24

they're seriously hung-up

I just did a search of the Portland Indymedia archives... one thing that jumps out immediately is that "Sheila Johnson" and "Cort Greene" seem to exist solely to attack the work of the activists in Portland Copwatch.

Here are a few example links. Just about anytime an article is posted to this site that mentions Copwatch, you can count on Cort and/or Sheila to magically appear and cast stones.

Here are a few examples:
 http://portland.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=7900
 http://portland.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=6772
 http://portland.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=6510
 http://portland.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=8292

my favorite is probably this one:
 http://portland.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=7282
in which Cort says "(COPWATCH) are police also"

This was laughable stuff at first but has become extremely annoying. I would like to reiterate a call made by an indymedia poster a few months ago - Cort, Sheila, organize a community meeting to discuss your problems with Copwatch. I'll be there.

Casting virtual stones at Copwatch on an internet message board is no way to accomplish anything positive, even if your claims of Copwatch=cops were true. Grow up and find a real enemy.

Sheila's pithy analysis convinced me! 02.Apr.2002 12:34

Copwatch sucks, I follow Sheila now

Sheila and Cort should lead the revolution! They are so very wise and committed and so deeply involved with the radical community in Portland!

Tell us, great leaders, when and where you will begin the next great public uprising against Capitalism!

---

On a more serious note, any quick inquiry within the radical and progressive communities should suffice to inform the interested person about how much real and important work the local Copwatch organization has been responsible for over the past decade. Copwatch is well-respected. The same simply cannot be said for some of these wanna-be critics.

Copwatch is all right! leave em alone. 02.Apr.2002 19:43

Heckno

I have little Idea of how you could judge anyones commitment to a movement where there is such a lack of community. I hope that people around this town will start working with eachother, really getting to know each other. That way accusations like this would be as a drop in the ocean. One thing I know is this. A few months ago at the march against imperialism I witnessed as copwatch members stood in the way of angry mall security barring them from trapping the carousing protesters inside. They (unknown copwatch people) Risked physical injury as those bastard renta pigs were pretty pissed at us for crashing thier consumer party. They told the pig that they wern't gonna leave until everyone exited the building. The pig shoved one of the copwatch people and pushed the camera into anothers face saying "Get out, don't film me!" They stood thier ground.
I would aggree with anyone who said there are a lot of big heads in this town. There are.
But that day, seeing you people, I was proud to live here. To see that some times, some people, brave thier fear and face adversity for thier beliefs.

through thick & thin,
heck

I've seen Copwatch in action too. They're brave. They're committed. They work hard. Even a cursory examination of the facts illustrates the sharp contrast between Copwatch's consistently great work and Cort&Sheila's petty, cowardly side-sniping. Do you guys really have nothing better to do?
