Minutes ago the House debated House Joint Resolution 75, regarding the monitoring of weapons development in Iraq, as required by United Nations Security Council Resolution 687. The text of the resolution can be read at :  http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c107:H.J.RES.75:.

As described by Rep. McDermott (D-WA), Rep. Conyers (D-MI), and Rep. Paul (R-TX), the resolution amounts to a declaration of war against Iraq and would effectively permit the President during the winter recess of Congress to begin an attack on Iraq. The online version of HJR 75 provides that Iraq's failure to comply with UN Res. 687 regarding weapons inspections amounts to "an act of aggression against the US." Apparently, the wording has been amended after some debate to provide that Iraq's actions present a "mounting threat to the US." Despite the change in language, the supporters of the resolution did not conceal their intentions. Rorbacher (R-CA) said "it is time to finish the job" in Iraq. He also supported the US going after other countries that "support terrorism against the US" one by one. Rep. Paul (R-TX) spoke eloquently against the resolution saying there was no threat from Iraq but that this resolution was about Middle East oil. He stated that it is the equivalent of China saying it has an interest in the Gulf of Mexico.

In light of the fact that US troops are being built up in the Gulf, I believe the US intends to expand its war against terrorism to other countries in the Middle East.

Please contact your representatives and encourage them to vote against HJR 75 which is planned to be voted on before the end of the week and before the winter recess of Congress. You can obtain your reprentative's contact information here:  http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW.html.
