NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE FOR
DECEMBER 12, 2001:

Dear Fellow Nurses:
Today, management caused a considerable amount of confusion with their misrepresentation of the facts. We have received the notices management sent to nurses today and are shocked at their boldfaced lies about us. Let us address these one by one:

MYTH: "ONA REFUSED TO MEDIATE WITH OHSU UNTIL FRIDAY"

FACT: The state mediator called us on Tuesday to arrange a mediation for Friday; we agreed. After twelve noon on Wednesday, we received a call from the mediator saying that OHSU suddenly wanted to get together immediately. It is not possible to get the Team together on a moment's notice, since we were all committed to other meetings, jobs, etc. Management knew this and is using it as another ploy to try to discredit the AURN Team.

MYTH: "ONA IS REFUSING TO HOLD A VOTE ON THURSDAY OR FRIDAY BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO HAVE A VOICE"

FACT: We are holding a vote on Saturday so that we can vote on management's final offer from mediation on Friday. We want you to decide the unit's course of action for Monday, December 17. Management is trying to take control of our democratic process by dictating when and where we should vote. This is not only unethical, but borders on illegal. Management cannot get involved in our voting process and should not be trying to undermine the mediation process.

MYTH: "SATURDAY IS TOO LATE"

FACT: OHSU is trying to intimidate nurses into accepting an offer now before they "take it away" on Friday at 3pm We are entering mediation on Friday and they've already decided that their offer will be taken off the table at 3pm? We believe that this is an example of management saying "Jump!" and they expect us to say, "How high?" We will not be intimidated! Many nurses have worked very hard to organize the vote on Saturday. What they're really saying is, "If you don't take our offer now, we will punish you by offering you less on Friday afternoon." Shame on them! If they can make an offer today, they can make it again on Friday.

MYTH: "OHSU HAS TO WRITE A CHECK ON FRIDAY TO PUT A DOWN PAYMENT ON STRIKE-BREAKING NURSES. ONCE THEY WRITE THE CHECK, THEY'LL HAVE TO SUBTRACT THAT MONEY FROM THE OFFER TO OHSU NURSES".

FACT: We don't know which lie to attack first. They originally told us they were writing the check by today, Wednesday, at 5pm. Suddenly, the date has changed. They told us they had a "contingency fund" from which they would draw the money. Suddenly, now it will be taken away from our offer. They told us in May they didn't have any money because the legislature reduced their budget. Suddenly, we found out they actually made 33 million! Let's not be fooled by this latest ploy to pretend their pockets are empty. Did you know that OHSU's "Master Plan" calls for spending half a billion dollars in the next few years to expand the campus down the hill?

Our recommendation to OHSU management regarding that check: Don't write it! You shouldn't be hiring these people anyway!
