Friday, Dec 7th. A group of women dressed in black marched silently from the UO campus to the federal building, winding through Eugene's rush hour evening. Before beginning the walk, various speakers adressed issues of violence against women, ranging from the current and past events in Afghanistan to the daily violence of women's lives in Eugene. The group, which ranged in size from 40-70 women and children, carried signs, lanterns, and a small casket. Commuters quietly read the posters: "Rape is Terrorism Everywhere", "Violence against Women is Political", "Fuck this Racist War", "Is your sadness and fear being exploited for power and profit?". Many drivers nodded as the procession passed. At the federal building the women circled together to speak, sing, cry out, and write down their hope and fury. Many women expressed feeling strength and inspiration from the gathering.
