Ten Social service workers from Streetlight Youth Shelter and Porchlight Crisis Shelter, were on the verge of being arrested under the wishes of their employers when bargaining turned sour this afternoon. Workers represented by IWW IU650 made considerable compromises in bargaining today to make sure that no one is working below $9.00 an hour. Workers estimated this would cost JANUS an extra $550 ontop of their current budget. JANUS argued it would cost over $1000. Either way they made it clear that they are not willing to come up with the extra $1000 (a mere 1/130 of Dennis Morrow, the Executive Director's salary).
Upon hearing this workers were very disspointed and refused to leave the building until an agreement could be reached. Managment opted to have workers removed from the building. Workers occupied the office for about 2 hours before long negotiations with the police. While about a dozen more IWW members/sympathizers arrived in support. The social service workers voted to leave without arrest, while management refused to recommence bargaining until a later date.
All this for a matter of $1000!!!!!
