Monday, August 20th, marked the launch of SHAC's (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) campaign against the Bank of America. Around the country groups held a day of action against their local Bank of America location for the company's affiliation with HLS (Huntingdon Life Sciences) financiers Stephens Inc., the investment firm responsible for saving HLS from bankruptcy in January 2001 and also HLS's largest shareholder. The Bank of America runs its entire mutual fund program through Stephens Inc., creating a duplicitous and profitable relationship for both companies. As a company who prides itself on being environmentally and socially responsible, animal activists hope that, after being made aware of Stephens's role in funding HLS animal cruelty, Bank of America will choose to end its business relationship with Stephens, hitting them in the only place they seem to take notice--their pocket. In Charlotte, NC, from 11-1pm SHAC held a press conference kicking off the campaign at BoA's corporate headquarters. A SHAC representative did live interviews with two major T.V. stations who plan to air the coverage on the 6 o'clock news as well as with The Charlotte Observer, THE Charlotte newspaper. In Portland, from 11am to 2pm, 20 to 30 protestors assembled outside the Bank of Abuse(America) headquarters, lofting a banner advertising the new bankofamericakills.com website and holding signs illustrating how Stephens Inc., the sole investor of Bank of America's mutual funds, invests their money. Almost all of the informational material was handed out, many to horrified Bank of America customers. Video of one of the undercover investigations was also shown, and passersby were understandably repulsed by what they saw. This was a largely peaceful but visible demonstration, and no arrests were made. Meanwhile, 20 animal rights protesters held a high-energy demonstration outside the BoA headquarters. The public was very receptive and almost all the literature was handed out. Activists hope that the BoA aspect will bring the Stephens campaign to the streets, allowing many people to take action against Stephens by closing their accounts at BoA. Simultaneously during the BoA demonstration, animal activists posing as FedEx workers stormed the Charlotte Stephens office, pushing past the locked doors, yelling and chanting, throwing leaflets around and creating a huge disruption. They promptly left before being arrested. Sunday night before the BoA launch, SHAC held a speaking tour date at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Twenty-some-odd people attended, hearing the history of the HLS campaign, asking questions, viewing the "HLS: The Truth" video and vowing to pressure their local office. Cities around the country participated in the launch, including Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Portland, Chicago, Salt Lake City, Houston, Sacramento and Sonoma. -San Francisco- As a participant in the launch of the BoA campaign, ARDAC-SF held a protest outside their BoA office, with dozens of protesters in attendance for this high-energy demonstration. One activists was handcuffed, but not arrested and later released, for burning a giant effigy of a Bank of America ATM card. Monday, August 20th also marked the official launch of a new website, www.bankofamericakills.com. Check it out to learn about BoA's link to HLS and how you can help encourage them to use their power to CLOSE HLS!!
