COME PROTEST THE DECLINE OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE RISE OF FASCISM AND OPPRESSION THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
Carlo Giuliani, age 23, was killed by Italian police on Friday, July 20th, for protesting the G* summit in Genoa, Italy. The Group of 8 (G8) is a totalitarian economic organization consisting of the U.S., Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Canada and Russia, the eight most powerful industrialized nations of the world. These countries consume the majority of the world's natural resources and use their military strength to keep the rest of the world under their control.
Carlo was only one of three who were killed during the protests. He was shot three times in the face, following a heated clash with a police jeep. The jepp then ran him over and then backed over him. During the protest there have been 280 arrests; between 500 and 700 injured; an estimated 100 people still missing; denial of prisoners' rights to talk to a lawyer; in jail beatings and torture; a wall of silence produced and maintained by corporate media; and horrible brutalities that the mainsteam British media even called "atrocious".
In solidarity with the brave demonstrators in Genoa, activists and concerned citizens of Portland mobilized and on Monday, July 23rd, marched to the Italian Consulate and the Justice Center. Besides unprovoked police violence (one woman was trampled and hospitalized with a broken foot during a mounted police charge) the march was a success in raising public awareness on the subject. As activists and concerned citizens wanting to see an end to police brutality everywhere, we feel Monday's demonstration was a great start but not near enough. It's time to speak out against the actrocties in Genoa and mourn for those who have been killed by the fascist Italian government.
