In a major victory for workers at the Pictsweet Mushroom Farm, Fred Meyer, a large retailer with 119 stores throughout the Pacific Northwest, has decided to no longer purchase Pictsweet Mushrooms. We understand Fred Meyer to be one of Pictsweet's largest customers in the region. A majority of workers at Pictsweet had signed a petition requesting Pictsweet customers to encourage the company to negotiate and if the company refused, to cease purchasing their products. Workers who signed the petition acknowledged their willingness to sacrifice possible hours worked and a reduction in wages as a result of this boycott.
Please join us in thanking Fred Meyer for their decision. For all of you who live in the Pacific Northwest, please make it a point to tell the store manager at the Fred Meyer closest to you that you support their decision to no longer purchase Pictsweet mushrooms. You can send an email to Fred Meyer at their headquarters at usmyrFM1@ibmmail.com Please make sure to cc us a copy at our address above. We would also ask you to publicly thank Salem Mayor Mike Swaim for taking such an open stand in support of Pictsweet workers. As you will see from the enclosed articles, his intervention was key. You can send your letters in support of Mayor Swaim to the Salem Statesman Journal at: letters @StatesmanJournal.com Please note there is a 150 word limit.
Finally, we need your help to continue to contact area grocers who still are selling Pictsweet mushrooms, such as Safeway and Albertson's. Workers at the Pictsweet plant have been visiting area stores to ask for their support by no longer purchasing Pictsweet mushrooms. They will continue these delegations until Pictsweet agrees to negotiate. You can support workers at Pictsweet by making sure your area grocer knows that you don't want them to purchase Pictsweet mushrooms as well. Ask for the store manager, introduce yourself and simply make your request.
We have a flier available off our website that you can download to share with the store manager about this struggle. Let us know how it went by sending us an email at this address: Farmworkerunion@pcun.org
Thanks for your support.
