June 6, 2001. Following a large protest in front of the United States Forest Service offices in downtown Portland, community members marched to the offices of Senator Gordon Smith to request he demand the Forest Service cease timber cutting operations at Eagle Creek immediately. Opposition to this timber sale has been vocal and vehement for more than five years, and the community vows "We're not going away." Though the sale has been put on hold pending an objective scientific inquiry, Vanport Manufacturing announced the end of May that they intended to begin cutting trees on June 1st.
