Comrades,

After months of hard work among a collective of anarchists and communitarians from across the globe, we are pleased to announce the existence of a new international anarchist organization - the Anarchist Communitarian Network!

The purpose of the Anarchist Communitarian Network is to facilitate the integration of the anarchist ("libertarian socialist") and the intentional communities ("cooperative living") movements. We see both as having a lot to learn and gain from the other .

We see both as springing from common roots -- discontent with the dominant social norms of alienation, competition, and antagonism. Likewise, we see both movements as working toward similar solutions to these problems -- a qualitative change of social relationships and institutions to be more cooperative, nonhierarchical, democratic, intentional, intimate, and authentic. Despite this common ground between the two movements, we see unfortunate prejudices, misunderstandings and misconceptions in the minds of both anarchists and communitarians.

To help bridge these gaps between the two movements, we seek to:

1) Explain and deepen the understanding of anarchists about intentional communities and the intentional communities movement.
2) Explain and deepen the understanding of communitarians about anarchist theory and practice.
3) Help facilitate interactions between the anarchists who want to live in or are already living in intentional communities.
4) Help facilitate interactions between anarchist intentional communities that are forming or already in existence.

The Anarchist Communitarian Network will not discriminate against different nationalities or forms of intentional community. We are an international network of individuals, groups and intentional communities and we support all forms of nonhierarchical, democratic, intentional communities -- housing co-ops, squats, co-housing, communes, land trusts, collective houses, intentional neighborhoods, eco-villages, etc.

The Anarchist Communitarian Network has a web-site at: http://www.anarchistcommunitarian.net This site contains a number of articles about anarchism and intentional community, lists of events that are of interest to anarchists and communitarians, papers explaining our reasoning behind our positions and links to both anarchist and intentional community organizations across the globe.

We also have two e-mail discussion lists - one theoretical and one organizational. To subscribe to the general theoretical discussion e-mail list on anarchism and intentional communities, and how these two relate to each other, please send a message to: ">lists@tao.ca With the words "subscribe acn" in the body (without the quotes).

To subscribe to the e-mail list dedicated to the Anarchist Communitarian Network organization in particular, please send a message to: acn-request@lists.riseup.net With the words "subscribe acn" in the body (without the quotes). With both of these lists, you will be receive an e-mail asking you to confirm your subscription request before you can subscribe.

We have a number of projects that we are working on or planning on working on, including starting a publication, producing and distributing anarchist-communitarian pamphlets, starting a federation, and holding conferences. If you would like to get involved with the Anarchist Communitarian Network, you can subscribe to the organization list above or write to yan_ock@zensearch.net.
