Blase Bonpane Jesuit Missioner and founder of the Office of the Americas will speak at Powells Books. Blase dedicated his life to serving the poor in Guatemala in the 70s and early 80s. His activism earned him the rath of the Guatemalan Hunta and nearly lost his life before being secreted out of the country. Upon resettling in Los Angeles Blase founded the Office of the Americas and became a programmer for Pacifica's KPFK. Blase's programming was informative and controversial and enjoyed by most. One who did not appreciate Bonpane's programming is KPFK General Manager Mark Shubb. After 15 years on the air, through 5 General Managers Blase decided that the rancor created by Shubb did not lend itself effective programming so he withdrew his services and left KPFK on HIS terms. Blase also is a founding member of the California Green Party and was in the first group of people to run for congress after the California Greens gained ballot status in 1992. These were the first prople to run as Greens for Partisan Office in the US.
Blase will be speaking about his new book Guerillas of Peace on the Air at Powells Monday March 5 th at 7:30 PM. Please note this is the Powells on Hawthorne Blvd. Don't pass up this oppourtunity to meet an extraordinary individual.
